SHANGHAI, August 23rd (AsiaPulse via COMTEX)

China’s copyright protection alliance for domestic animation industry
was set up in Shanghai on Thursday, in a bid to provide a platform to safeguard copyrights for made-in-China cartoons.

Initiated by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, the animation division of Shanghai Film Group, and the Beijing-based Shineshow Co., Ltd under Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd, along with local legal firm, the alliance will take advantage of the rich online resources of Shanda and the 30,000-minute cartoon reserve in Shanghai Animation Film Studio.

The alliance will kick off its copyright protection campaign on the 2010’s film version of the classic cartoon Black Cat Police Chief, with a focus in its new media and audiovisual products.

China’s domestic cartoon output in the first half of 2010 stood at 240,000 minutes, while that for the whole 2009 was only 170,000 minutes. The fast growth of the industry has also given rise to increasing cases of copyright infringement.

Besides copyright protection, the alliance will also make attempts in the innovation and research and development fields of Chinese classic cartoons.

Beijing, August 3rd (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) – Canada’s IMAX Corp is aiming to nearly triple the size of its big-screen network in China, state media said Tuesday, as it looks to tap into huge box office receipts fuelled by a growing middle class.

China is the firm’s fastest-growing market and it plans to increase the number of IMAX theatres in the country to at least 65 by 2014 from the current 23, the China Daily reported, citing company officials.

“It is interesting that China has many new multi-use complex infrastructures, and it is easy to integrate IMAX theatres (into them),” IMAX chief executive Richard Gelfond was quoted as saying.

The exploding number of new theatres and rapid growth of China’s middle class in recent years have also given IMAX a new incentive to expand its presence, he added.

The company has signed agreements with Guangzhou Jinyi Film & Television Group to open 12 IMAX cinemas in China that are to be completed by year’s end, the report said.

It has also signed deals with a private movie exhibitor and a cinema chain operator to install at least six 3D IMAX theatre systems in more than four cities by 2012, the paper said.

In June, the company announced a partnership with Chinese studio Huayi Bros Media Corp to produce three IMAX-formatted movies, it added.

China’s box office take in the first half of 2010 — driven by international smash hit “Avatar” — reached 4.84 billion yuan (714 million dollars), up 86 percent from the same period last year, official figures showed.

Officials predict box office receipts will reach 10 billion yuan for all of 2010, compared to less than one billion yuan in 2003.

“Avatar” — one of several 3D blockbusters to hit cinemas this year — is now China’s all-time box office champion, grossing 1.3 billion yuan.

IMAX, which specialises in immersive motion picture technologies, operates more than 445 theatres in 47 countries, according to its website.

GENEVA, July 14 (Reuters)

China has agreed to open up its market for entertainment goods by March 19th 2011 in line with a World Trade Organization ruling.

The United States had challenged China’s barriers to imports and distribution of books, music, films and other entertainment products, and China finally lost an appeal in the case at the WTO last December.

China had argued that entertainment goods should be handled differently from other imports because of their cultural impact, but the United States said that China was wrong to impose monopolies on imports that were authorised for sale or were anyway available through pirated copies.
